Wendy and family from Portland, Oregon
My husband wouldn't let me get chickens until he saw the eglu. A lot of people
in Portland have chickens and I really wanted some since an instructor had told
me how good they were at eating weed seedlings and slugs. We have had a great
experience with our eglu. It is easy to clean, fits nicely in the corner of our
backyard and the hens love it. I couldn't wait to get it to move the chicks
(Apple, Isis and Cleo) out of the house. They are now 6 months old and laying
every day. Our 2 and a half year old loves collecting the eggs with me and giving
them treats of kitchen scraps.
I think the best benefit for us has been the "chickens as garbage disposals" aspect.
We recently moved into a new home. I didn't realize that it didn't have a garbage
disposal, the chickens have definitely picked up the slack.
Also, my friend tried to make a coop by himself recently, he has spent several
hundred dollars on materials and countless hours of his time, I feel like I got
the better deal.
At a party we had recently the chickens were the star and all of the kids made
them jump to get string cheese. The next day one Mom reported back that all her
daughter could talk about was the chickens!

JoAnn and family from Fredericksburg, Virginia
Returning from school one day in late May, my daughters spotted 3 chickens loose in our neighborhood.
It was an odd sight for sure. We live in the suburbs! Concerned for their safety, my daughters and
I rounded them up. That was quite an undertaking, but we managed to coral them in our back yard.
Knowing nothing about chickens, I went straight for the internet. After a few minutes of surfing,
I found the Omlet website. It was full of information about these little critters.
I read everything I could and soon fell in love with the eglu and its design.
Once I felt we could keep the hens, I just had to have an eglu. We waited with such excitement
for its arrival & gleefully set it out for the hens. They took to it right away & one of the chickens
was laying beautiful brown eggs.
But within two months, two of the chickens passed away. It was so sad for us.
We had grown to love them. Perhaps, they were abandoned because they were old?
I guess we will never know. At least we were able to give them a good home in their final days.
Soon after, I began looking in the local paper and found a place that had bantams. Our love affair
with chickens had begun. One Sunday afternnoon, I brought home three silkie bantams and one leghorn.
Two of those bantams turned out be roosters, they were such characters but had to go back.
Gotta keep the neighbors happy, you know! We then picked out two more little pullets.
They are all enjoying the eglu and the two youngest bantams just seem to love the eglu and the run.
I think they feel very safe and secure in there. We certainly like it and are so glad we got one.
I never would have guessed that chickens would make such fun and entertaining pets. And, we just love the fresh eggs!

You can't imagine a simpler project than keeping a few hens in the
Eglu. When I get home from work, I let my three hens
out of the Eglu's run, into a big (50'x 40') fenced-off area in the
backmost part of my back yard. Every day, their routine is the same: Edna, the head hen, makes a beeline for the compost heap. When she's
eaten her fill of bugs, she then jumps out of the bin and leads the
others, who've been craning their necks, anxiously waiting nearby for
her return, in a turn around the yard.
I bring them treats--cottage cheese is their favorite--just to watch Pearl, my Giant Blue Cochin,
run. What a hoot! It's like having amusing (but also very useful) lawn
ornaments. I feed an organic laying feed, so friends and neighbors are
clamoring for the fresh organic eggs. And the heavy, packed, black
Central Texas clay soil in my yard now has a lovely, loose layer from
their constant scratching. I'm so pleased that I bought the Eglu for them. The hens are
safe in it, and they seem very comfortable and content. And it's so
quick and easy to clean. Thanks, Omlet!

Penelope from Housatonic, Massachusettes
At age 69, I decided it was now or never to fulfill my lifelong
dream of having my own chickens, and it was made possible only by your wonderful eglu. My blue eglu arrived
in May, and I'm proud to say I put the whole thing together myself.
My three Gingernut Rangers came three weeks later. Ginger, Nutmeg and
Clove began to lay in about 3-4 weeks, and I get steadily 3 large eggs
a day now. They have become quite tame and run to me when I even come
out the door. They make the most wonderful sounds, which I am still
learning how to interpret. They have a large fenced-in area in which
to forage, but every once in a while I let them out into the larger yard,
which they love, of course. I can't let them be as free as I would like
as I have a lot of flower beds, which they quickly rearrange in their
enthusiasm for bugs and worms. So I just keep an eye on them and put
them back in their pen when I think it's been enough. So I'm getting eggs,
joy, and bug control (not to mention great manure), all from these beautiful
friendly birds. Blessings on all the Omlet people who have made this possible for me!

I only ever had two defined dreams for my life. One was to live by the sea, the other,
to keep chickens. Living in a city and dealing with Multiple Sclerosis, they were beginning
to look more and more like pipe dreams. Omlet, and their tremendously helpful staff, their
supportive and informative online community, and of course the superbly designed Eglu,
turned keeping chickens from a daydream into a sweet reality for me. My three 'girls',
Nina, Doris and Lily, are endlessly entertaining. My four year-old daughter is enchanted
by them and loves being able to help take care of them. I am thrilled to be 'able' too,
and the easy maintenance of the Eglu setup makes this possible. Now if Omlet could just
find me a house on the beach. . .
