The modern game bantam has almost gained status as my favourite bird over the few months that I have owned them. Many people argue that modern game and other game breeds are marmite birds - you either love them or hate them. Its easy to understand why, as long skinny legs may not be to everyone's taste, especially those used to the typical Orpington style breed. But I love them! I would highly recommend modern game for anyone looking to keep a unique and interesting breed. They are very sweet and friendly, don't take up much room and are adorable foragers as they're so tiny. I have also found them to be very good layers - on par with my wyandotte bantam. So go and buy yourself some! I promise you won't regret it.

From their size you probably wouldn't expect much in the way of eggs but they lay equally as well as Peking Bantams and with eggs of a similar size. Their quirky personalities and friendliness make them charming additions to a enclosed garden, though be aware that these are great climbers and their nosy nature will take them into bushes and onto anything that may resemble a perch, if you wish to keep these as garden birds then make sure it is well enclosed.
The modern game body shape means that flight is minimal, they can jump quite high and will glide back down to the ground in the same way most pekings do. They do not need their wings clipped as this is their number 1 defence mechanism against cats etc.
For appearance I gave them 5 stars but really it's in the eye of the beholder, the colour varieties are delightful as are the long legs and beautiful shape of the body. If you're breeding them then appearance and shape is everything, on show birds they are remarkably stunning and very distinct.
Handling wise as with all chickens you need to begin early, mine adore cheese and mealworm so regular hand feeding brings them on quickly. They will climb all over you to get something tasty and will relax when held correctly.
These are English birds so do very well outdoors all year round, they love sunbathing and will peck around in the rain though they do need shelter and somewhere warm to roost. They adore slugs & snails and all the baddies you want rid of, and they definitely have a 6th sense for finding them!

I found the modern game bantam very cheeky inquisitive friendly bird,I ran hens and cocks together quite peaceably,They have a habit of chatting to you when they recognise you and will follow you around. The downside was I found them very poor layers.
