Keeping Your Rabbit's Nails in Check

Much like their teeth, a rabbit’s nails will grow at a surprisingly fast rate. Because of this, it is important that you trim your bunnies’ nails once every two months or so. How long you can leave them depends on how much your rabbit is allowed to wander around and dig outside, as this helps keep their nails at a suitable length. A more simple guide is to make sure that your rabbit’s nails aren’t sticking out beyond their fur.

How to trim their nails

You will need to trim their nails back to around ¼ of an inch from the quick. The quick is the fleshy pink part inside the nail. Most of the time you will be able to see it, but it might be a bit more elusive if your rabbit has darker nails. Be careful when you do it, and be sure to only cut off small amounts of nail at a time. If you cut too far back you may cut a blood vessel, this isn't too serious but you will need to use a bit of cotton wool to soak up the blood.

If you're not very confident, it may be wise to get a vet or veterinary nurse to show you how to trim your rabbit's toenails

Going to the vets

If you don’t feel as if you are up to the task of trimming your rabbit’s nails, or would like to see how it is done, don’t worry. A vet will be happy to trim the nails for you.
