Speak to Omlet ambassador

Ambassador since 2020
I've been raising chickens since July 2020. If you’re like me, you want to know a lot more about Omlets before making such a hefty investment.

The first Eglu Cube I purchased is 5+ years old. I was lucky enough to find it for a deal second hand with 4 hens. I fell in love with the hens, the eggs and the easy security and maintenance of the coop. We've moved since that first purchase into a house with a 16x21 sided greenhouse on the property where my hens now reside (there are photos of the setup at each house). I've increased my flock to 15 and purchased two other Eglu Cubes (one used- like new and one purchased new) and an Eglu Go Up (purchased second hand) after being very impressed with the durability and ease of my original coop. My two used Cubes are both going strong. They look and function just as good as my purple Cube that was purchased new. I can’t see any indication that there will be any decline in quality. The heavy duty plastic doesn't warp or bend. The connections are solid. The runs are easy to add, increase or remove. They are most definitely an investment, but one you won't have to make again. While wood coops are nostalgic looking and sometimes cheaper, they also come with many potential issues and need to be replaced every so often because the wood just doesn’t hold up. They are often very heavy and difficult to move. It takes me around 25 minutes total to clean all the coops every other weekend. I use a hose and blast the poop off the nesting bars and periodically use a pressure washer for more stubborn calcium spots. Coops smell fresh and I know that my hens are healthier for it. If I need to move the coops to rake out the greenhouse, the wheels make it very easy.

Before I decided to embark on raising chickens, I did a fair bit of research about what the pitfalls were. Mites were of particular concern. With the Eglu coops, they’re really easy to prevent. There aren’t any big crevices for the mites to hang out in. Because the coops aren't made of wood, they’re extremely quick to clean and inspect, too. Twice a year I wheel them outside and pressure wash them in entirety. It’s very easy and thorough.

I also have read that the shape of roosting bars is important for foot health. Eglu allows hens to group together when it’s cold outside and the bars are shaped so that their feet are comfortable. For chicks, I use the small GoUp once they’re fully feathered. I fill up the tray with hemp bedding initially so that the chicks can walk easily on the bars. As they get bigger I lessen the hemp and they get used to the roosting bars. It works like a charm! I have found that the GoUp is the perfect size for raising a group of chicks before they graduate into the larger coops.

Before moving to the new property, we moved the coop (with run) around our backyard every few days. The wheels made it very easy. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking at a new coop. I would also highly recommend the auto door. I invested in these for each of my coops. I love that you can set them and forget them. They open (and close) on schedule. It’s one less thing to do in the morning when I’m already getting ready to head out early for work and I know the hens are let out at a safe time. I also added an auto door to the outer wall of the greenhouse. The hens spend the majority of their day in the greenhouse, but also get some free range time. The auto door on the outside of the greenhouse really makes scheduling easy. All of the auto doors are very easy to install and make a huge difference in the ease of keeping a small flock.

Feel free to contact me and schedule a visit or a call for more information. I'd be happy to introduce you to my flock and show you the coops.
