Worms climbing up the sides of your wormery walls indicates that they aren't comfortable in their environment and are trying to find the promised land. If you notice your worms climbing the walls of your wormery, try checking the following:
- Food and Bedding Balance: Avoid overfeeding your wormery and regularly add carbon-rich materials like shredded newspaper, cardboard or egg cartons to provide essential bedding and a safe retreat for the worms.
- Moisture Adjustment: If the compost is too wet, add crumpled newspaper to absorb excess moisture. If it's too dry, add water until the correct moisture level is reached.
- Temperature Control: Ensure the compost is within the ideal temperature range of 59–77°F. If necessary, move it to a more suitable location.
- Avoid Overfeeding: Do not overload the compost with food, especially during times of increased food waste.
By maintaining these conditions, you can create a comfortable environment for your worms and help prevent them from climbing away.
