Thursday 04 July 2013

Ah, it’s a lovely cooler morning after the heat of earlier in the week. Flags fly in town. Andy and I walked to our new favorite bakery/cafe, Snapdragon.  We picked up some delicious pastries–a chocolate croissant, blueberry cinnamon swirl, and … Continue reading →

Amri has three photos in this month’s exhibit at the Hardware Store Restaurant in uptown Vashon. Be sure to drop by sometime this month–or on the First Friday if you can, for the Gallery Cruise–to view these photos by Amri … Continue reading →

Saturday 25 May 2013

Our small propane-powered Swedish refrigerator (chosen because it’s silent!) is over-flowing in duck eggs. Our Easter Egger hens (Turtle and Kooshie) are five years old, and lay at a serene pace. Our Serama hens are forever broody. Our three female … Continue reading →

Years ago our oldest child attended a Waldorf-inspired nature school.  One of the moms helped the kids make this delicious salad dressing.  When I make it, I can’t help eat gobs and gobs of greens! Goddess Dressing Makes 2 cups 1/4 c. fresh lemon juice 1/2 c. vegetable oil (she uses sunflower oil – so do we!) 1/3 c. tahini 1/4 [...]

Friday 05 March 2010

He’s so excited!  It’s springtime!  He wants to chase and peck and crow! The only problems is, he isn’t allowed to crow because we’re in The City and he isn’t exactly welcome here.  Poor Lord Firestar, he doesn’t like being put in his cage.

Wednesday 24 February 2010

Another egg!  This one is darker than any of the eggs we’ve gotten so far.  Who layed it?  The plot thickens. Hopefully I’ll get some pictures soon!  I keep forgetting! Suspects:  Yellow Chipmunk (possible….) Help (I doubt it) I don’t think it was Egglantine or Lady Sandstorm.  Egglantine still looks like an overgrown baby and Lady Sandstorm lays a lighter colored [...]

Thursday 18 February 2010

We think she is!  We’ve gotten two eggs on the roosts so far and Lady Sandstorm never lays in the roosts!  Best of all, we got two eggs yesterday!  I’ll try to get some pictures in the next few days! Lord Firestar has been crowing a lot.  He’s also been dancing for his wives more than [...]

Kooshie may be my Backyard Chickens username but she’s also my adorable Easter Egger!  Don’t you love her?

Thursday 04 February 2010

We ate the two Lady Sandstorm eggs today!  That means today was the first time since August that we had real eggs!  They were really good and extremely orange!  Pure happiness!  We thanked Lady Sandstorm, of course.

Wednesday 03 February 2010

QuackStar was a funny duck.  He decided to join our family on May 31, 2009.  We were pretty startled when a day old duckling ran up to us!  We quickly became good friends.  He would follow us around the house, feet slapping on the floor, bill vacuuming lint and crumbs.  He loved water! Baby QuackStar: This is [...]

Sunday 31 January 2010

She finally did it!  That’s our first egg since August 28, 2009!  That’s a long time to go without eggs.  But there’s more: Chipmunk and her sisters keep sneaking into the Eglu and sitting in the nest!  Maybe they’re going to lay soon.  Yay!

Thursday 28 January 2010

Today was a perfect day to take pictures.  The photos I took were so clear and bright that I didn’t need to use any filters to enhance the color! Chipmunk and Help hang out. Lord Firestar.  This picture is beautiful!

Friday 22 January 2010

I haven’t been able to take new pictures lately because it’s been raining!  Last night the wood pellet bedding swelled up so much that it lifted the roosts!  Poor chickens.  Eglus are fabulous but they aren’t the best in wet weather, they’re too low to the ground. Commenting: I have been getting a LOT of spam [...]

Saturday 16 January 2010

We went to a poultry show today!  Here are a few of the millions of pictures I took! This Call duck was adorable! A true Ameraucana (bantam)! She was very interested and alert. Lovely to see. I just loved this Delaware bantam! I have plenty of pictures left to post but resizing takes time and not resizing [...]

Sunday 10 January 2010

Lady Sandstorm is an obsessed creep.  Really.  She doesn’t care what I do with her as long as there’s hair to peck.  I would have been able to put that diaper on her but I was afraid of accidentally snapping her neck. Even with her *ahem* oddities, she’s still very loveable and has helped me with [...]

Thursday 07 January 2010

I tried putting the diaper on Lord Firestar today.  That’s right, tried.  Turns out he’s too big and feathery for the extra small size!  Next I’ll try it on Lady Sandstorm.  Hopefully it’ll work! Here’s a few useful chicken links: Omlet is the company that created the Eglu (yes, that should be enough to tell you that [...]

Wednesday 06 January 2010

That’s right, diapers!  Some relatives got me and Lord Firestar a purple butterfly extra small chicken diaper!  As you may (or may not) know, I really wanted one!  I’ll take pictures of it tomorrow!  Cross your fingers that it will work right! We gave the Seramas milk today and Lady Sandstorm drank a lot.  Then her [...]

Monday 04 January 2010

I have six Seramas at the moment.  Two from Jerry’s Seramas and four which were hatched from said pair’s eggs.  They are: Lord Firestar, rooster of the flock.  He’s heroic in the sense that, like a hero in a book, he fears violence and bloodshed.  A gentle rooster. Lady Sandstorm has an obsession.  She loves hair!  The [...]

Saturday 02 January 2010

So, we’re having a passive solar bermed home built in the Pacific Northwest.  You might not think that this would be a sensible venture (how often does the sun shine amidst cloud cover and rain?).  But we have great southern exposure on this land, and all the calculations showed that we could have an effective [...]

Thursday 31 December 2009

Pretty exciting!  We haven’t had a new decade in ten years!  I’m not sure what I’m going to do to celebrate.  Don’t worry, I’ll think up something.
