Friend or Foe?

It's hard not to love ducks and mostly this affection is completely harmless but sometimes an admirer can get a bit carried away. Foxes, for example, are notoriously bad at maintaining a balanced relationship with ducks and so it is best for all parties if they don't meet in the first place.

Luckily the Eglu is a very safe place for your ducks to be. The run is made out of steel weld mesh, much stronger than ordinary chicken wire and has a 15cm skirt to prevent digging. The Eglu itself is made from a sturdy twin walled construction and has no exposed catches for the fox to open.

Precautions you can take

  • Be concientious about locking the ducks up at night, preferably as soon as it gets dark.
  • Don't leave any food lying around the garden.
  • Make sure that the dustbin is always securely closed.
  • If there is a male in the household, ask him to urinate around the garden as this will act as a chemical repellant to the fox (honestly!)
  • Increase the height of your fence to at least six feet all the way round.
  • If you have an extremely persistant offender then you can call in a pest control company (look them up in the Yellow Pages).

At the time of writing councils are not taking the problem of urban foxes particularly seriously, so why not also write to your local MP to raise the problem.

6ft fence and keep checking around the base of the fence for digging that needs closing

Urban foxes are becoming a big problem in South Oxford. They regularly visit during the day now and we lost 3 chickens to the fox today. Now looking for a way to keep the remaining 3 safe. Foxes easily jump over high fences, using garden benches etc. as 'stepping stones'.

No amount of urine helped deter the foxes for us - they visited in daytime too! A 6' fence is what you really need
