I live in the southern central part of Alberta, in the foothills, and have started to identify many birds recently, and started noting their behaviours. In the spring and early summer, there are many you g yellow finch that seem to spend alot of time on the ground; unfortunately, I also have a dog & cat, although my dog gets more bids than my cat. I have tried to look up reasons for the you g to spend so much time on the ground which enables my dog to get them before I can get them to safety. They sometimes run; but they cannot outrun my dog and it kills me when he does what comes naturally to him. Are they hot? Too tired from not being experienced fliers, or built up enough muscle? I try to scan my acreage prior to letting the dog out of his kennel (we also have bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars, etc., which is why my dog is in a kennel at night) but with such a large area, it is hard for me to scan everywhere. The only information I get is sickness, but they aren’t; this assumption is based on the volume of young on the ground each spring. Any insight will be welcome! Thank you!

Hi we have a male canary who has started inter-acting with us, and we wonder what his behaviour indicates. He chirps raises his wings as a sort of hood and lowers his head a little, while hopping energetically between perches and floor. thanks

I have a canary laying unwanted eggs continously in her seed feeder. What is the reason and solution?

Maureen, 17 January 2019

My female zebra-finch is 10x more active than the male. And he won’t eat out of the feeder that’s higher up in the aviary, only on the floor of it. Does he just not want to eat where the female eats? I don’t think she’s been aggressive towards him in the feeder, though I don’t watch them 24/7. Thank you

I have two male finches and every day around noon they seem to aggravate each other and start fighting, is this common with finches.

Hi, I have a couple of zebra finches. They are laying eggs, but when the number of eggs reaches around 6, the hen becomes very aggressive and attacks the male. He cannot enter the nest anymore. This is the 3rd time I restart the whole process (nest building and laying) in order to stop the attacks. Does the male can die ? (The attacks are violent) Should I give up to keep the eggs ? Thank you a lot

I have 2 male finches in a cage. One of them has lost all the feathers off the top of its head only. I did have a nest in the cage. But I have taken that out. It’s been out for about a month now. They don’t seem to fight.
