Guinea Pig Illnesses

There are a wide variety of illnesses that guinea pigs can have, but checking them over regularly will help you know when to take your pet to the vet. It’s a good idea to spend a little bit of time giving your guinea pigs regular health checks to make sure they’re in good condition. This doesn’t need to be done by a vet, you can do it yourself as long as you have a good idea of what your guinea pig looks like normally, and you know to keep an eye out for some particular problems.

This section contains health-checking and treatment advice, as well as a collection of brief summaries of some of the most common health problems. Ultimately, if your guinea pig looks a bit off-colour and is having difficulty moving or breathing, we strongly advise you take your pet to the vet as soon as possible. Symptoms such as laboured breathing, listlessness, a lack of appetite, bloating, bleeding, injury and noises of distress in particular require speedy medical attention.
