Egg Food

During mating or moutling, your finches will need an extra protein top-up. One of the most popular ways of providing this protein is with egg food. You can buy egg-food at most pet stores, and you can also make your own at home. Below is a simple recipe.

Java Sparrow on nest
Egg food should be provided if your finches are nesting

  • 1 egg, with shell
  • 1 tbsp cooked brown rice
  • 1 tsp millet
  • 1 tbsp crushed budgie pellets OR milled, mixed seeds
  • 2 tbsp mixed chopped and grated fruit and veg

Boil the egg for 15 minutes until hard. Remove the shell and grind it up. Finley chop the boil egg. Mix up all the other ingredients with the egg and shell and then serve cold. Fruit isn’t needed here, but many finches will appreciate the sweet kick. Never add honey, or any other sweeteners, to the mix and don’t be fooled by the recipes saying that 1 egg and a few digestive cookies will do - any cookies that have been made for humans are not suitable for finch consumption due to the added sugars and fats.

Egg gives your birds a protein boost and is ideal for the moulting, nesting, mating seasons, as well as in times of stress. It isn’t required at other times, though it will still make for a good treat.

Can I mix egg food in with the Gouldian finches seeds. As they are seed addicts and wil not eat anything else. It is safe to mix through their seed.
